The scent of herbs is heady as it flows from the shop on the corner of 5th and Laramie, and a dainty tabby lounges in the sun spilling through the large plate glass windows of the Bell, Book, and Candle shop. Across the district, a man smiles as he whispers an incantation over a small potted plant where the shoot of a mandragora herb was slowly growing. In the arts district, an art dealer tucks a prosperity charm behind a painting on the wall in hopes it will help it sell. A palm reader works out of her small family home in the Historic district, and her eyes go glassy and distant as she trembles and whispers in a harsh, otherworldly language, caught up in a vision of her neighbor’s future.
It’s the year 2020, and things seem to be business as usual in the city of New Haven, Maine. People go about their daily lives, blissfully unaware of the second world and its machinations playing out under their very noses.
This second world, often called the Underground, is a world of shadows and secrets, magic and murder, bonds and blood. It’s the home of vampires, were-creatures, witches, and more. It’s a world where the unwary can end up suffering fates worse than death, and the savvy can achieve heights and status of power beyond their imaginings. But this world, like so many others, has its own set of rules. There are politics, power struggles, in fighting, and turf wars. Some days are worse than others, but no day passes by without some sort of activity.
While the humans in the know do their best to keep this chaos and danger away from the average citizens of New Haven, those in the Underground itself are engaged in a daily struggle for power and survival, all while balancing the demands of day to day life just like everyone else.
A Note From The Narrator:
Bell, Book, & Blood is set in the world of Darkest Nights, taken from the novel series I am writing, with some adjustments for the ease of use on Storium. This game will focus primarily on the inner workings of a coven of city-dwelling witches, with all characters playing members of a coven whose primarily location is in the Historic District of New Haven, a fictional city located on the coast of Maine. This game will focus on a mixture of politics, supernatural dealings, and slice of life drama. I prefer to run my games as a bit of a sandbox, allowing players to take the story in the direction they most desire, so please do not let the short length of the story deter you – I am more than willing to expand to something longer if it becomes clear such is needed to accommodate people.
